Through the generous support of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Regional Innovation Engine development award, the Advancing Health Equity and Diagnostic Technologies in Georgia Innovation Ecosystem was formed.
This statewide technology-driven innovation ecosystem creates a novel partnership across technology developers, healthcare payers (e.g., health plan providers, employers, Medicare, Medicaid), and healthcare providers to stimulate innovation-driven economic growth throughout Georgia.
Join us as we pursue the next phase of NSF funding for this program with potential NSF investments of up to $160 million over 10 years to implement ambitious ecosystem plans.
According to a 2023 report, over 9.5 million Georgians, or 88% of the state's population, are currently covered by some form of health insurance. However, approximately half of this insured group, or 4.75 million residents, lack healthcare availability or underutilize healthcare services, including diagnostic, screening, and remote monitoring technology.
With technology-driven capabilities serving as its fuel, this statewide Engine will steer impactful innovation-driven growth by capitalizing on existing reimbursement plans for diagnostic, screening, and remote monitoring technologies and on the financial incentivization provided to insurance companies to improve patient access to the same. These incentives are even greater when testing is directly coupled with improved access to care, quality of care, and a reduction of chronic disease impact.
Through early detection and increasingly preventative services—enhanced by diagnostic, screening, and disease monitoring technologies — this statewide Innovation Engine will develop a set of programs and initiatives that will provide state-of-the-art home- and community-based services in close partnership with payers, employers, and providers.
By providing the 4.75 million insured but underserved Georgians access to these technologies in expanded community settings, such as places of worship, schools, outpatient clinics, in patients' own homes, and through mobile units, ecosystem programs will couple innovative point-of-care and health technologies with clinical "wrap around" services via community health, telehealth, and homecare providers.
Plans for Advancing Health Equity and Diagnostic Technologies in Georgia mean workforce development, job creation, expansion of existing business, and development of new ones.
